Highway 395

Elk Near Big Pine

A pastoral scene off Highway 395 north of Big Pine, California, but instead of farm animals grazing in an open alfalfa field, we find a herd of Elk has made its way down from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to feed.

The siamese-colored animals scatter through the field, with the Cows taking a place near the watering lines and cut fields, while the Bulls feed nearby in an open pasture. A closer look at one section of uncut alfalfa gave us a view of nearly 50 calves in hiding, their heads barely discernable amidst summer-dried, golden, uncut shoots of alfalfa that grew high during the season.

We'll see more of the nomadic herd as the Winter drives them down to the marshlands and fields of California's Owens Valley to graze.

The West

Wild Mustangs of Nevada

Wild Mustangs on BLM land north of the Fishlake Valley, east of Montgomery Pass, site of Boundary Peak, Nevada's highest mountain.

The year 2003 has been good to these three which have fattened up rather nicely on alfalfa trimmings and wild grasses bordering nearby farms. the Fishlake Valley was formed by glacial activity which left a prehistoric, inland lake after the melt. Over time, the lake eventually dried up. Some of the rocks in the area hold fossilized remains of lake fish that existed years before Paiute and Shoshone tribes arrived in the area.

Flint chips, arrowheads, bird arrowheads, spearpoints, beads and other tools have been found in the area, a popular crossroads for trading before the arrival of white settlers in the area, however all are protected under Tribal Law and BLM regulations, so look, but don't touch or take. <G>

Walker Lake in Winter

The first snow of the season falls near Walker Lake, north of Hawthorne, Nevada, and US Highway 95. The lake is one of five fresh water lakes that currently exist in the World -- Pyramid Lake, Nevada, being the second, while the remaining three are located in Central Asia. The lake is considered part of an enormous lake that covered what is now the Western United States in prehistoric times. The Lake is the target of a preservation effort since its level has dropped approximately 140 feet since 1885.
