The 2003 Hawthorne Air Show

The 2003 Hawthorne Air Show has just concluded at Hawthorne Airport, California, with a large crowd and some unique and historic aircraft on hand to greet them. The show was primarily a static display, with limited flying at the end of the show.

Several celebrity pilots were in attendance, including Tuskegee Airman Victor F. Miller (Los Angeles Chapter), who at the age of 17, flew the North American P-51D Mustang over Europe with the 332nd Fighter Group and has four confirmed kills, one probable; Bob Goebel, the pilot of the original "Flying Dutchman," who is credited with 11 confirmed kills in World War II, and is today, the author of "Mustang Ace: Memoirs of a P-51 Fighter Pilot;" and Louis Zamperini, a participant in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, a man that later became a World War II bomber pilot who was shot down, spent 43 days on a raft in the Pacific, only to be captured by the Japanese and sent to a rather brutal POW camp -- a harrowing story this author of "Devil at My Heels" tells in his book.

Among the Warbirds Silver State News Service will be featuring are the Commemorative Air Force Antonov AN-2 "Colt" and AT-6 Texan, from Cable Airport, Upland, California; a replica AT-6 featuring a Ranger inline engine; the C-121C "Camarillo Connie;" the C-46A Commando, "China Doll;" the North American B-25J Mitchell, "Executive Sweet;" the Grumman F-6F Hellcat, "Mitsi III;" the Waco UPF-7; the Boeing (Stearman) PT-17; a Travel Air 1000; the L-29 Delfin; the Nanjang CJ-6 trainer; the Hawker Hurricane of David Price; the Douglas A-1H Skyraider; and many more.

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."

-- President Theodore Roosevelt
Speech before the Hamilton Club, Chicago, April 10, 1899
