Seventy Five Images as of 10/17/2003 -- More to Come
![]() |
Sunrise on the
Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California, as seen from
Highway 395, which stretches from Mexico north to the
Canadian border. Named by settlers not for the State of
Alabama, but rather, for the Civil War-era raider, the
C.S.S. Alabama -- a ship that terrorized Union ships on
the North Atlantic -- the hills are known for the many
battles that occurred here between settlers and the
Paiute nation. Situated not far from the Manzanar internment camp, they are considered the portal to Mt. Whitney -- tallest peak in California -- and to the Eastern Sierras. |

Sunrise Over Edwards AFB
![]() |
| Sunrise, as seen over Edwards AFB, California, Saturday, October 25, 2003. Sunrises in the Mojave Desert are usually a spectacular affair, but made even moreso by the amount of smoke in the skies from ongoing wildfires in the mountainous wilderness areas near Edwards. |

| Los Angeles International
Airport (LAX) is experiencing foggy conditions this week
as a thick marine layer moves over the coastal areas and
into some of the neighboring valleys. Though the overcast usually makes photography difficult, the condensation trails caused by moist air travelling at high speed through openings in deployed wing devices and flaps make for an interesting display in the turbulent wake of the giant jet airliners, like these two Fed Ex Boeing MD-10PFs "Package Freighters" on short final to landing at LAX Runway 25L. Los Angeles International Airport will be the subject of an upcoming Photo Gallery at AirlinersAirlinersAirliners.Net, a subsidiary of Images of Light Internet Press Service (ILIPS), the parent company of Silver State News Service (SSNS). |

"Like A Storm In The Desert..."
![]() |
| A nighttime display east of Pearsonville, California, off US Highway 395 near Red Rock Canyon. Lightning filled the sky over the Mojave Desert, including cloud to ground, in cloud, cloud to cloud and only the second occurrence of "chain lightning" the photographer had seen in his life. How to make it stop? Get out of the car and try to take Lightning's picture. Works every time! |

The Sport Class Of Air Racing
Coming to Las Vegas Soon? You bet!
| The
Sport Class -- Elegance Defined!
|
Well,
November is climbing over the back fence and Thanksgiving
comes with it! What do we give "Thanks" for
this year!? That the day of the "Turkey" is
just about over and real Air Racing is coming to Nevada!
Las Vegas, Nevada, to be exact! Nellis AFB's Aviation Nation 2003 arrives on November 15-16 and along with it, Las Vegas-style Air Racing, featuring the second in a series of demonstration races as a prelude to the "real deal." Unlimited and International Formula One will be the featured attraction, but waiting in the wings, The Sport Class -- aka "NASCAR of the Skies" -- which will be represented this year by Northern Nevada hero John Parker and his promotional static display, the American Air Racing Thunder Mustang, "Blue Bijou," Race 351. These Glasairs can't wait to race Ol' Grandpa John, let me assure you of that! The countdown to Las Vegas begins this month at Silver State News. Left, the Glasairs of Vickie Cruise (Race 13), Arnie Luters (Race 8) and Craig Sherman (Race 19) over beautiful Pyramid Lake, Nevada. |

The Great Reno Hot Air Balloon Races of 2003
![]() |
The sunlight was brief on the morning of Sunday, September 7th, as wave and rotor clouds hung over the site of the Great Reno Hot Air Balloon Races of 2003. Tens of thousands were on hand for the three-day festival which features colorful, traditional and specially-shaped hot air balloons and their crews, Dawn Patrol, Blackjack by Balloon and Hound and Hare racing. |
Finally! Hot Air that contributes to actual Air Racing!
