The light leak had a more negative affect on this image, but still visible is the modified North American P-51D Mustang of John Crocker, Race 6, "Sumthin' Else" (is Ms. "O"), which was sponsored in 1981 by Advanced Products. Crocker won the National Championship in this aircraft two years earlier, in 1979, in the famed race that was the last for the RB-51 Red Baron, Race 5, which finished second, then crashed in Lemon Valley attempting to land following a Mayday. Pilot Steve Hinton survived the accident with serious injuries, and was released from the hospital one month later. Hinton now flies the pace plane at the Reno event.


The day after the 1977 Reno Air Races, and the wreckage of the Cadillac Automobiles involved in an impromtu crash car derby, unplanned, unannounced, in front of the Grandstands at the Reno Air Races. The two vehicles roard back to the Pits the day before with two Reno Police motorcycle officers in hot pursuit. Quite a show!


The Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Race 38, "Double Trouble," of Gary Levitz,. The aircraft was one of two P-38s raced at Reno in 1981, the other being Marvin "Lefty" Gardner's Race 13, White Lightning.


Race start in the Unlimited Class at the 1979 California National Air Races in Mojave, California. From left to right, Lloyd Hamilton in Race 16, the Hawker Sea Fury "Baby Gorilla," Dan Martin in Race 7, Ridge Runner III, center low is the Red Baron RB-51, Race 5, center high is John Crocker in Race 6, "Sumthin' Else," followed by John Muzala in Race 66, The Flying Undertaker and Charlie Beck, substituting for Howie Keefe, who was out of the races with a collapsed lung that occurred in San Diego weeks earlier, flying Race 11, "Miss America."


Rookie Jerry MacDonald by his newly purchased SNJ-4 Trainer, "Big Red," which featured a modified Race 51, incorporated into "Race 5," which was carried by the racer when it was MacMcClain's AT6 Class mount, "Red Baron."


An additional race startat the 1979 Mojave Air Races featuring from left to right, Steve Hinton in the RB-51 "Red Baron," Race 86, with John Putman at the controls of "Ciuchetton," Waldo "Clay" Klabo in Fat Cat and the nose of John Crocker's "Sumthin' Else" entering the picture from the right.
