There are always rumors regarding the tribe and, like most of those rumors, there is no truth to this one. Frances Snyder Public Relations Chumash Casino Resort Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Cell: (805) 325-1187 Email: fsnyder@chumashcasino.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mark S Daniels [mailto:bearzbearzbearz@yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, July 10, 2006 6:44 AM To: Frances Snyder Subject: Tall Tales Greetings: Received and read this story this morning: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did Boeing Defy Curse Of Vandenburg's SLC-6? Sends Spy Satellite Into Orbit From 'Cursed' Pad Is it possible for a launch pad to be cursed? Before you say no... consider the odd and, frankly, creepy history of the SLC-6 site at California's Vandenburg Air Force Base. Up until the successful June 28 launch of a Boeing Delta IV rocket carrying a spy satellite from the pad -- known colloquially as "Slick-6" -- the Space Launch Complex had a checkered history of spectacular failures, beginning with its original reason for existence. Construction of the site began in March 1966, to support launches of Titan III rockets supporting the Air Force's planned Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) program. When crews began excavating the site, however, they came across human remains. It turns out the site was an ancient burial ground for the Chumash Indian tribe. Despite requests from the tribe for time to study and excavate the site, NASA went ahead and built over the site... and as anyone well-versed in mystical forces could tell you, that's NEVER good karma. Local legend has it a Chumash tribal leader placed a curse on the site, in his anger over NASA's refusal to honor the remains. Of course.. curses don't exist, right? Well... before you say no, consider these facts -- The MOL program -- intended to put a military space station into orbit to spy on the Russians -- was scrapped shortly after the pad was completed Plans to begin shuttle launches from the California site were cancelled in the wake of the 1986 Challenger disaster The 1995 launch of a Lockheed communications satellite from the site -- 29 years after ground was first broken at Slick-6 -- failed when the rocket's hydraulic system bugged out shortly after liftoff. The August 1997 launch of the Lewis spacecraft started out promisingly -- but, alas, the satellite entered a flat spin after it reached orbit... which misaligned the probe's solar panels with the sun. Once month later, it returned to Earth... burning up in Earth's atmosphere. The April 1999 launch of the Ikonos commercial spy satellite met a similar fate, after its nosecone failed to separate after liftoff.. and it wound up in the Pacific Ocean A successful launch from SLC-6 finally occurred the following September, when a duplicate Ikonos satellite was placed in orbit by a Lockheed Athena booster... after the aerospace manufacturer allegedly hired a Chumash priest to remove the curse from SLC-6 (Lockheed denies such a ceremony took place.) While the satellite was successful, however, the rocket was not -- Lockheed wound up taking a bath on the Athena program, with only a handful of rockets sold. Boeing hopes its Delta IV booster meets a better fate... and so far, all systems seem to be normal for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) satellite, NROL-22. Emphasis on "so far"... and no word yet on whether Boeing asked forgiveness from the spirits before the rocket lifted off. FMI: www.boeing.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm very interested whether or not ANN contacted Santa Ynez Chumash Tribal Board for any attempt at confirming the story. I am left wondering if this story is true, and at this moment, I do not believe it is. I am also interested whether or not the Santa Ynez Chumash were the source of this information? My understanding of the situation at SLC-6 is that potential Earthquake faults were found running under or near the pad and that's why launches of manned missions were cancelled there. Unmanned missions from the pad were studied and obviously proceeded with. This is an oddball story to say the least, but ANN did get the local tribe correct. However, Mr. Campbell lived in Northern California at some point in time, thus he could have picked this up from proper sources, or at the Chumash Casino while under the influence, someone thought him an idiot, and told him a Tall Tale. So, I'm curious about whether or not there's legitimate background to this story? This sounds like an irresponsible act by an individual who thinks he's a member of the True Press, i.e., those souls who still strive for Truth in Journalism. It's not a club ~ it's an endangered species in Journalism. Also, failures are an expected in rocketry. We have spent the morning contacting Lockheed Martin and Boeing to see whether either possess any information regarding successful launches at that SLC-6 facility versus the purported unsuccessful launches above? We are asking them "Did either have any information as to a "Chumash Curse" being placed on the launchpad prior to launching from there?" Or did either have any technical studies to go by allowing it to determine proper safety criteria for SLC-6 launches? Specifically, we have asked why was Boeing not afraid to launch from the former Shuttle Launch Complex 6? Even with the potential for a fault line under SLC-6, Boeing seems quite enthusiastic launching from other pads in the vicinity of the former Shuttle Launch Complex...so does Lockheed Martin and for that matter, the US Air Force. I appreciate the time you may have to spend confirming or debunking the story above. However, I like my "Voodoo" to be "Troothfool." I want that same Truth for my readers and those of others. I do not believe the Editor of ANN to be a truthful man in the first place, and further, I believe his information is bunk in that the Chumash were considered a peaceful tribe (correct me if I'm wrong; I can be ignorant of a lot of things in this World as well...) and I cannot imagine any Chumash Tribal Elder placing a curse on anything or anyone. Not that anyone would blame them, considering the things I curse on a daily basis (traffic, SUVs and their drivers, living in Los Angeles, and lying Faux Journalists (!)etc.), rather, my brief studies have not led me to believe that Chumash Elders or Religious Elders would place curses on others. From a legal standpoint, this gets interesting, as in Louisiana, people who believe in "Voodoo" have been brought before Courts and reportedly convicted for placing curses on others, especially those involving a curse of death to the victim. The argument is, if either party believes in Voodoo, which is representative in the South and Mid-South, of some religious beliefs, and also Haiti, where some of these beliefs have migrated from, then the "curse" is considered "real" and an attempt on the life of another. I have been researching that issue and have had trouble finding confirmation, so it goes back to "I only know what I read in the papers," according to Will Rogers, who was a member of the Cherokee Nation. In this event, however, we have a report that a Chumash Elder or Religious Elder placed a curse on a launchpad at Vandenberg AFB prior to its completion, based on a report of an offense committed against the Chumash, desecration of a burial ground ~ and we all know that particular offense to be a common, heinous offense committed by the U.S. Government and its People they/we landed on the East Coast, but whether it occurred at Vandenberg AFB or not is not confirmed (I will be in contact with them right after this message is sent to you...) ~ and that the launchpad in particular, SLC-6 or Shuttle Launch Complex 6, was destined for manned missions at the time, resulting in this question, based on the information stated above, that if someone believes a curse is true: "Was an act of murder intended against U.S. Astronauts or others based on an alleged curse placed by a Chumash Elder or Religious Leader on SLC-6 and operations there?" Again, I do not believe it possible, however, the minor paragraph and story above, as printed this morning by Jim Campbell and ANN, is disturbing to me in that Mr. Campbell's credibility is non-existent when it comes to whether or not he's telling the Truth; stories such as this tend to harm and create Stereotypes against not only the Chumash, but all Native American tribes (i.e. The People, The Human Beings, as opposed to the BLM moniker...), and stories such as this must be debunked or confirmed ~ for the sake of Truth ~ resulting in hours of labor and an approximate ratio of having to utilize 1,000 words to debunk just one word used wrongly, (i.e., in an act defined by Law as a "Hate Crime") etc. The damage done, in other words, snowballs if it's allowed to continue and worse, snowballs as well, because of the attempt to confrim or debunk erroneous stories, and will continue to do so until the Truth is factually known. Therefore, to make a short story long ~ is there any Truth to this story and did Mr. Campbell make any contact, or did any of his ANN agents, vectors and representatives, make any contact with you to confirm or deny this particular story? Are you aware of any of the background to this story and whether or not the details have been accurate presented, represented or, are they just more bunk heaped on the shoulders of the Santa Ynez Chumash by the ignorant? Please forward this to the appropriate Press contact if your department is not the one who should be answering this. I was looking specifically for Tribal Headquarters but was uncertain of contact information. I may have contacted the wrong department. The story above is at www.aero-news.net on the internet. It was posted overnight by Jim Campbell and his cronies there. I have no respect for them and this type of story tends to fan the flames I feel in regards to their non-sensical lies of past and present. If the story is True, then the Chumash know its origins. If the story is not true, then the Chumash should not suffer from the lies of a Storyteller, especially one that is not Chumash. If this story is not true, I intend to blast it to pieces in my Press at ILIPS Group. I have a warm spot in my heart for Mr. Campbell and his lies here... ...some would call it "Hell." I tend to think it's acid indigestion from the stress of reading his tripe. But this story I need confirmation or denial on. I thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you soon.
